Clostridium perfringens Type A

7051

Etiology

Almost all Clostridial organisms are normal inhabitants of the soil and the digestive tracts of farm animals. Yet, when they become overwhelming invaders of susceptible animals they produce toxins which are highly fatal. Type A is found to be a problem mostly in poultry. Although recent research indicates that it may cause hemorrhagic enteritis (bloody diarrhea) in larger animals, little practical information is currently available and no vaccines are available that we know of.
